Biography
Nathaniel
P. Stottlemyer was influenced by a variety of folk music traditions at
an early age while growing up amongst the picturesque Appalachian
Mountains of western Maryland. Mr. Stottlemyer is an
“accomplished performer” (Maryland Gazette) of world percussion
instruments and is a specialist in the percussion traditions of The
Middle & Near East (particularly the frame drums of Egypt and
Nubia) and is well versed in the techniques of West African,
Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian percussion. He's performed with Shems,
Jenny Oaks Baker, N. Scott Robinson, Luis Garay's Percussion
World, Fortune Rota Percussion, The McLean Orchestra, The
Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra, The Trinity Chamber
Orchestra, The Washington Ceremonial Brass, and The Summer Opera
Theatre Company Opera Orchestra, among others. His performance
experience includes appearances at The John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, The Music Center at Strathmore, The Baltimore Museum
of Art, The Basilica of the
National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, The Franciscan Monastery
of the Holy Land, Saint Matthew's Cathedral, and The Chesapeake Arts
Center. He is a featured soloist on the DVD, “Sestraluna –
A Belly Dance Show” (2009, Candlelight Productions). His album
credits include Crevel (2010, Independent) and The Catholic
University of America, "Wind Serenade” (2000, CUA). His debut
solo
album "The Roads that Leads East" is expected to be released Winter of
2010/11. Mr.
Stottlemyer has appeared on productions aired on PBS and ABC
(Philadelphia). He has composed 6 pieces for world percussion and
is a contributing composer of audition repertoire for Anne Arundel
County Public Schools, MD. Mr. Stottlemyer proudly endorses
instruments by the Wright Hand Drum Company.
He has studied with master percussionists Michel Merhej Baklouk, Karim Nagi Mohammed, Murat Coskun, N. Scott Robinson, and Luis Garay. His formal education includes a B.M. in Orchestral Instruments, Percussion Principal from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and he is currently completing coursework towards his M.S. in Music Education, Ethnomusicology Emphasis at Towson University, Maryland.
Mr. Stottlemyer is the Director of Bands and Music Department Chairperson at Brooklyn Park Middle School, Baltimore, MD. His ensembles have commissioned works by world percussionist and composer Marla Leigh. He is a contributing writer of the Music Goes Global and Percussion Ensemble curriculums of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, MD. He is a dedicated educator with much experience in culturally and socio-economically diverse populations, including Title I schools. He is an in-demand clinician, having presented for educators and percussionists at the Music & Arts National Education Representatives Conference (Baltimore, 2009), Dupage Clinic (Chicago, 2010), and the New Jersey Music Educator's Association Summer Conference (Red Bank, 2010).
